NO ONE SAID IT WOULD BE PRETTY

The rich are getting... stupider.

So I spent most of today cleaning my apartment, washing clothes and getting ready for my trip. As I was running around I had the TV on for some background noise. One of the programs on TV caught my attention and waylaid me for a full hour as I sat on my couch wondering what this country is coming to.

The name of the show is Party Party, and it features two families from different parts of the country and how they go about planning and executing similar types of parties. They have shown weddings, anniversaries, graduations... that kind of thing. Well this one was sweet 16 parties, and I nearly lost my mind.

In case you are not from the US, in a lot of regions here families celebrate the 16th birthday of their daughters with special parties. I never had one per se because my parents don't go in for that kind of thing (they did take me out for a rather nice dinner), but some of my friends had parties with all their friends. Mind you, I came from an affluent suburb of Boston where very few people were hurting financially. Moreover, some of my classmates' families had $2 more than God, and nobody had what I am about to describe.

So one family from the show was in CA. The daughter Samantha can only be described as an overprivildged, spoiled, obnoxious shit. She needed a solid smack in the head. Her mother needed a massive whack, because she was the one feeding this little monster's warped views.

For Samantha's 16th birthday party her parents spent well over 35,000 dollars. They rented a hall in a hotel, had it catered, and brought in entertainment. But it doesn't stop there. They got her a 3,000 dollar a night room at the hotel, 5 dresses to choose from for the party, and had her and her close friend picked up in a Rolls-Royce and taken for a day of pampering at the spa.

And what is Samantha's reaction? Well, first of all, she gathers her highschool cheerleading squad and passes out invitiations to her party... conspicuously leaving out a few of the girls. What a nasty little bitch. Then she has a meltdown because he parents do not buy her a brand new BMW, and only give her theirs as a gift. She also had a fit about a host of other things, obviously unable to show any sort of gratitude. Let me just say right here that if I had EVER spoken to my mother the way this child did, my life would have been over. OVER. And no one would have found my body, either.

Meanwhile what were her parents thinking? First off the mom was having a crisis of her own, topped off by her showing up to the party in one of Samantha's dresses (all of which were made for a 20 year old... NOT NOT NOT a 16 year old OR a 45 year old). But the weirdest thing was that she was surprised by her daughter's ungrateful nature.

Uh, HELLO you asinine cow... you spoilt your child beyond any imaginable means, and then you wonder why she acts like Kelly Osbourne in princess get-up? What child... no, wait... what ANYONE needs a friggin $35K birthday party? OK forget need... why? Why would anyone spend that kind of money.... ugh....

I am done thinking about it. Thank God my parents raised me correctly. I got exactly what I needed (as opposed to what I wanted) with a few surprises thrown in. Nothing extravagant. But that's alright. I do not think that is how parents should show their children love.

In the last 30 years of existence, I have had one extravagently spent new year... when I was 25 and a couple of friends suprised me with a cake and candles...

Anyway, I think the super rich are realyl pitiable. They have so much of money and so many options, they are a little confused and are running like headless chicken, not knowing what to do. Its actually a wonderful feeling knowing that what you can afford is just a limited choice, makes it more easy to accept reality and exist with feet firmly on the ground.

I have a feeling all these so called reality t.v. shows are actually staged. If you watch two episode of the same show, you would realise that there is a script guiding people what to do.

I think, everything short of extreme porn and snuff has been tried out in the tubes and dull brains all over have been so saturated, they dont rise anymore.

So the t.v. channels are discovering more potent viagaras for the human brains. WWF, Female wrestling, in-bedroom and near shit-pot cameras, humans acting like animals, people stranded in an island, women/men fighting for a baron in france, paula jones and her stupid antics.

Jerry springer the original inventor of demeaning entertinement and his clones are all over. Imagine a public spectacle on whose child is it ? Ron and Vennesas ? or venessa and brian or Ron and Clara.

It is indeed an important issue to be shown on live t.v.

I am just wondering what next ?

Here in India the story aint anymore different .. The rich do have obnoxious bithday Parties for their kids.. which in itself is not the problem coz it is their money and they can spend it any way they wish.. But then they go about hiring a ground or open space in a residential colony and the party is irritatingly loud and disturbing with them playing music at ear shattering decibels...
nice blog
cheers

do you really think what they show on TV is true? cos it seems a lil tooo fake to me. pt number 1: people are never them selves on TV- so will such a thing as reality show be ever real? pt number 2: the producer wont recover his costs if he hasnt got somethin saucy or absurd to show... like this family of wackos, so for the sake of money they decided to overlook their responsibility towards the viewers. how convenient!
be it anywhere in the world, there will always be parents who give so much to their kids that their kids thik that the objects of their lil-one's desires grow in their backyard. see, that lil snob thinks that a brand new BMW grows in her folk's backyard- she is pissed that they didnt pluck it off and gift it to her!!! why blame the kid , its the parents who need to be spanked first.being rich is one thing and not teaching your kids the responsibility that comes with the money power is another. some parents think, 'what can we do about being rich, our kids cant do without these small needs'... to them i guess their kids are walking-talking objects that display their social status.
i hope this show didnt inspire other kids to be like this spoilt-brat!

vasu... yeah I agree. I think I made simimlar comments when I went off about the movie Hostel. It's really pathetic. Although I would not really agree with you about how not having money is a wonderful feeling. Having choices is the ultimate freedom. It's just sad when people make crappy decisions. But there are rich people out there doing good things... a few, anyway

sriharsh mallela...ugh, that is certainly annoying. are there no noise ordinances in india?

neets... well yeah I think some of these reality shows are completely scripted. but knowing the behavior of bratty teenaged girls, I think the producers just found the worst one out there and filmed her... saved on script writing! And yes for sure it was her parents giving her these ideas. Shameful. But at a certain age you should begin to see the ramifications of your actions. This girl was simply clueless.
